Description

Sylvia Rae Tracey

Born Sylvia Rae in Edinburgh in 1969, Sylvia only recently moved south in 2005 to wed jazz drummer Clark Tracey. Her career as a vocalist spans back to her teen years and took in jazz, folk and blues gigs with a variety of local heroes. Sylvia was born into a musical family – her mother is a music teacher and her father is her native country’s best-known bassist Ronnie Rae (recently dubbed ‘The Godfather Of Scottish Jazz’). Sylvia’s voice has never belied her Celtic roots, compelling the listener to examine the sound of her words and her highly personal interpretation of songs. On `Up From The Skies’ she draws from a vast library of material, whether it be the Jazz songbook or the Blues or from her own original material. Her astute choice of compositions is complemented by the excellent arrangements by Clark Tracey and an all-star cast of British jazz musicians including Stan Tracey (on three tracks), pianist Zoe Rahman, guitarist John Paricelli and saxophonist Simon Allen.
